Django Reinhardt NY Festival (Friday through Sunday) Dorado Schmitt, a
veteran guitarist with the roguish charisma and pencil-thin mustache
required of any French Gypsy paragon, is the inexorable star of this
Django Reinhardt NY Festival, as he has been in some years past. He’ll
be joined by his countrymen and fellow specialists Ludovic Beier, on
accordion; Pierre Blanchard, on violin; Xavier Nikci, on bass; and
Francko Mehrstein, on rhythm guitar. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland,
315 West 44th Street, Clinton, (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; $30
or $40 cover, with a $10 minimum.
Frank Wess Quintet - (Friday through Sunday) The subtitle of this
engagement is “Celebrating Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Other
Giants of the Tenor Saxophone” — a good assignment for Mr. Wess, who
at 89 is seasoned enough to deliver firsthand testimony on the
subject. His own playing, on tenor saxophone as well as flute, is its
own gallant enticement, and he’ll be backed by an able cohort: Greg
Gisbert on trumpet, Michael Weiss on piano, Noriko Ueda on bass and
Winard Harper on drums. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola,
Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 60th Street and
Broadway, (212) 258-9595, jalc.org; $30 or $35 cover, students $15 for
select sets, with a minimum of $10 at tables, $5 at the bar.
