Great mention of Emilio Caceres, and a bit of story to go with it. I was
working with my dad's band in the 50's and we were playing a gig in San
Antonio, and had lunch in an al fresco place with a Mariachi band
strolling. Guitar, big bass guitar, mandolin and violinist . As they
came up by our table, dad looked up at the violinist and he did a
double take at dad, then they both spoke at once -"Emilio," and "Hey,
Red." They had been friends from the time when Emilio was working a lot
in the 30's in Chicago and dad was with Weems. It was like old home week
for both of them and name dropping was going full speed.
I had the pleasure to meet Ernie Caceres when I was in NY right after
high school graduation in '49. Dad was booked into a club in NY and we
would prowl the jazz joints on his nights off. At Condon's I met Ernie,
Gene Schroeder, and a young guy who looked like Glenn Miller with a
brush cut who played intermission piano - yep, Ralph Sutton. Actually
got to work with Sutton at the Elkhart Jazz Fest in the 90's. Wild Bill
was playing and dad said, "can you guess who this is?" (Meaning me.)
"Don't tell me -- not 'Little Donnie Ingle?" Bill and roomate George Von
Pfister (bassist and artist/print maker) had the apartment down the hall
from us the year I was born ('31). "My how they grow -- I can remember
when Red had to leave a good poker game 'cause "Eddie" (my mom) called
and said to come and change his diapers." Anyone tells you an18-year
old is too cool to blush is SO wrong!
Thanks for the rememinder to catch Riverwak, Don, and your salute to the
Caceres, part of a great family of superb musicians of many styles and
talent beyond belief.
