A Season of Many Singers in Jazz at Lincoln Center

NY TIMES - Feb 28 - By Ben Ratliff

As was the case last year, singers look to be an especially high
priority among the bookings in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s coming season.
On Tuesday, the organization announced the new season’s schedule,
which runs from this September through June 2012.

Jon Hendricks will perform in the opening-night double bill with Jimmy
Heath at Rose Theater (on Sept. 24); Cassandra Wilson and Dianne
Reeves each appear in their own two-night runs of Rose Theater
concerts (Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, and Feb. 24 and 25); and Nikki
Yanofsky, Luciana Souza, Catherine Russell and Michael Feinstein are
all booked at the Allen Room.

Last season also featured concerts by Ms. Reeves and Mr. Feinstein, as
well as Bobby McFerrin, Diane Schuur, Nancy Wilson and others.

Two 50th birthdays will be acknowledged. The first is that of Impulse
Records, with a concert featuring the bassist Reggie Workman leading a
20-piece band (including the trumpeter Charles Tolliver and the
pianist Stanley Cowell) in a reading of John Coltrane’s 1961 work
“Africa Brass” (Oct. 28 and 29). The other birthday is that of Jazz at
Lincoln Center’s artistic director, Wynton Marsalis, who will perform
a retrospective of his large-ensemble work and play newly written
music as well (Oct. 13 through 15).

There will be shows devoted to the work of the Cuban bassist Israel
Cachao López (Jan. 20 and 21); Stan Kenton (Feb. 17 and 18); Astor
Piazzolla (Nov. 11 and 12); and Jelly Roll Morton (May 11 and 12).

As for jazz’s current eminences, the season brings major concerts by
Herbie Hancock (March 9 and 10) and Wayne Shorter (April 27 and 28),
as well as one about the postwar tenor saxophone tradition (March 23
and 24) led by the saxophonists Joe Lovano and Bennie Maupin.

A new feature of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming will be a blues
series in the Allen Room of the Frederick P. Rose Hall, programmed by
the singer-songwriter Taj Mahal, featuring Shemekia Copeland, John
Hammond, John Mayall, and Taj Mahal backed by the Phantom Blues Band.

Otherwise, the organization plans to continue its mission of education
and audience building within jazz, blues, cabaret and Afro-Latin
music. The initiatives include its annual Essentially Ellington high
school band competition, its Swing University jazz-history classes,
its Jazz for Young People series and its nightly bookings at Dizzy’s
Club Coca-Cola. Tickets and subscription information are at jalc.org.
