Dear Bob,
You are right, there were two Decca versions of "SRSP". 16 November 1937 and 23 Jan 1939.
It's easy to tell which is which as the first was a 12" 78rpm disc 3.31 long backed with the superb "Dogtown Blues".
(I still have my original 78.) The later one is a 10" 78 (2.48 long) with Fazola on clarinet.
Is your 'el cheapo' CD called 'Jazz Club'? with the following tracks:
(I haven't bothered to edit out the funny notations.)
One Clock Jump û Harry James. 2. Solitude û Duke Ellington. 3. Mississippi Mud û Bix Beiderbecke. 4. It DonÆt Mean A Thing û Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli. 5. Tiger Rag û Teddy Wilson. 6. ThatÆs A Plenty û Red Nicholas/Miff Mole. 7. South Rampart Street Parade û Bob Crosby. 8. King Porter Stomp û Jellyroll Morton. 9. HOneysuckle Rose û Count Basie. 10. Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams û Glen Gray. 11. Woodchoppers Ball û Woody Herman. 12. Take The æAÆ Train û Duke Ellington. 13. Lonsome Road û Muggsy Spanier. 14. Egyptian Ella û Ted Lewis. 15. Stop, Look And Listen û Tommy Dorsey. 16. Miss Annabelle Lea û Django Reinhart & Stephane Grappelli. 17. St. Louis Blues û Louis Armstrong. 18. STardust û Coleman Hawkins. 19. Frankie And Johnnie û King Oliver. 20. Sweet Georgia Brown û Benny Goodman. Format: CDLabel: Time Music International|Single DiscGenre: JAZZ Barcode: 5033606001626
If so, I expect it to be one of the Deccas mentioned above. Just check it against the times for each.
There are other versions of "SRSP" by the Crosby band on LP and CD.
A radio broadcast 'Swing Concert' (16 November 1937); a film short soundtrack (20 June 1938); a World transcription session (25 June 1939); a Camel Show broadcast (27 June/4 July 1939) and another broadcast from the Hopkins Hotel, SF (12 December 1940).
If your CD is not the one indicated above, it could contain one of these lesser known LP/CD versions.
If none of this helps, send me an MP3 of your subject track, and I should be able to identify it.
More about Eddie Miller's clarinet recordings later.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
