Just back from
Saloona in Jaffa, where I heard the New Orleans Function - a
pianoless group featuring Bob Greene on piano.
Wow!
The band gets better and better from show to show. And Bob Greene is
still superb!
For those who don't know or remember: Bob Greene is a Morton
specialist. He wrote the liner notes to that excellent Jelly Roll
double album on Milestone.
He also headed a show "The World of Jelly Roll Morton," with Milt
Hinton, Ernie Carson, Effie Resnick, Herb Hall, Danny Barker and Tommy
Benford, which resulted in a fantastic RCA album issued on its Red
Seal label, usually devoted to classical music. Later he took a
similar show on a tour of the United Kingdom. One concert of the
latter tour is available from GHB (GHB BCD 415); unfortunately, the
RCA album has apparently not been reissued on CD.
The music went very nicely with Samuel Adams' October Fest.
Cheers
