Dennis Mackrel was at Pensacola JazzFest 2010 along with pianist Russ
Kassoff, violinist Aaron Weinstein and guitarist Howard Alden.  Mackrel and
Kassoff have recorded together and, I think, Mackrel played with Kassoff's
big-band group.

 

Likely Mike Lynch may have remembered (white)  drummer Butch Miles who has
had at least two extended tours as drummer for the Basie Band.

When Dennis Mackrel was at last year's Pensacola JazzFest we talked about
his first time with Basie in the middle eighties.  I saw the band June 6,
1983 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  (Still have the poster.)  I remembered
the drummer as being a tall thin white cat, but Dennis was pretty sure he'd
been on that gig.
