Sometimes it is hard to know if the early singers were really Jazz singers.  

To put this in context:

Imagine someone hearing Java by Al Hirt and never hearing his Jazz work.  They would probably say, "He's not a Jazz player."  

How about The Ray Coniff singers, or The Aker Bilk commercial recording of "Strangers On The Shore."
