Polite snip from Rick :
I'm pretty sure Jazz isn't in your genes, altho a
few coloured musicians like to think they have a
corner on it.
It was in their Genes Rick like it or not: and that
is predominately what put the swing into Jazz. Chances
are pretty good that without those Coloured folks there
would never have been any Jazz, and the Dixieland players
would all still be playing Souza Marches and Waltzes.
And Country & western players would still be playing,
My Old Kentucky home, and Came from Alabama with a Banjo on my knee,
instead of Western Swing and Big Band Swing with educated musicians.
We study and practice the Pentatonic Scale, and
I'll bet most of those good coloured players in
the 30's didn't even know what it was, or that
they were playing it. They just grew up with it.
They had to learn it by Ear Rick since they often
were not allowed to attend School.
I grew up with Jazz -- my folks were record
collectors, and started playing it for me in the
Crib.
Those Coloured musicians could certainly not afford to buy records
in those days either and were not allowed to perform in places where
your parents probably went to dance and listen either :))
It's also why most Coloured musicians don't play DIXIELAND either:))
If that was your cicrcumstance -- join the club.
Cheers,
Rick
