Pat:

I would have to say that you summed it up very well in your last paragraph.

What I found to be considerably more satisfying was Concerto for Classical
Guitar and Jazz Paino, a compositon by Claude Bolling.

I have two versions of it; one on Angel

Angel Romero, guitar
George Shearing, piano.
Ray Brown, bass
Shelly Manne, drums

the other on RCA Victor

Alexandre Lagoya, guitar
Claude Bolling, piano
Michel Gaudry, bas
Marcel Sabiani, drums

There are quite possibly other renditions, but I have found the above two
most enjoyable.

When I was listening yesterday to the album where Itzhak Perlman joined the
Andre Previn Trio, I was reminded of the Duets albums that Sinatra recorded
during the 90s.

As you might know, Frank recorded in a studio with an orchestra behind him,
but all the others recorded their parts separately, hence the phrase "phoned
them in".

This sounded like Itzhak had phoned in but gotten the wrong number.

I have another album in my LP library that is probably a collector's
item.........not because it is so good but because it is so bad. It's a
collection of western ballads by Tex Ritter, backed by Stan Kenton.

I learned within the last several months from the chap presently leading the
Stan Kenton revival band that both Tex and Stan were drinking when the album
was conceived and regretted having recorded it soon after its release.
