You will have Canadian Tim Allan on the cruise who still lives in your
neck of the woods in summers. A soloist professional rather than a jazz band
specialist, but reknowned as a teacher and publisher of instructional
materials. Tenor player. Jeff could hang out at their sessions.

Scott Anthony, banjo/guitar for Bob Shultz, who has already posted you a
really helpful response will be aboard I think.

Also Dick Williams has very specific ideas on what he wants from banjo
players as far as their role in the band. Some don't want to abide by his
guidelines, or have told me they "can't". But I have him and those who will
be working with him in his Jazz U. at sea on my "favorite people" list. So
Jeff could pick up tips from them all. Also good opportunities to listen
to both tenor and plectrum. No doubt some guitar-tuned banjos will be along
also. You almost always have to ask players how they are tuned. I know
plenty of guitar tuned tenor banjos. Occasionally a tenor has their banjo
soprano ukulele tuned. As far as plectrum necks, guitar and plectum tuning
are close enough that it is often hard to judge by looking how the player
is tuned.

I would so love to be joining you, but it's not to be this year. Have fun
singing and with all of the jazz immersion.

I am doing this research for my good friend and partner Jeff. He soaks up
knowledge like a sieve and now that he is retired, he will have tons of
time to apply and practise.

Heading off on the www.jazzsea.com cruise out of Fort Lauderdale on
January 2nd where I plan to sing.

Getting really excited!
