Joe Tarto was a sweet man. He played with the Buffalo Disaster Jazz Band at
Hambone Kelly's in Boonton a couple of times between 1978 and 1980. I once
offered to carry his tuba to the car for him. He declined, saying, "When
I'm too old to carry it, I'm too old to play it. And that ain't yet."
It was a joy working with him. Not blazing solos, but solid and listenable.
Backed up the band superbly...knew all of the chords to all the tunes.
