I feel that talking of Wynton on this list is a little like talking of
"It's a Wonderful World." Or, why not talk of socialized health care?
Ok, I'm going to stick my neck out a bit further to make it easier to
swing the ax. I think Wynton is great. Do I like everything he does, no,
but most is MKOM. A lot like Al Hirt. Many adore him, and the rest think
he was a commercial waste of extraordinary talent. I like it all.
My tastes are surely a lot wider than many fundamentalists here. And, I
have met and seen a number of the others in this group. Ali Jackson for
one, on drums. The nephew of the great Oliver Jackson, Ali has played
Jazz en Tête with his own groups and as a side man and he has always
knocked me out. A young fart that can really play. I find Victor Goines,
Marcus Printup and Carlos Henriquez world class as well.
I'm not familiar with Chris Crenshaw on trombone replacing Wycliff
Gordon. Unfortunately, we didn't get to hear him solo.
Personally, I think the rhythm section swung just fine and I'd be happy
to play with players of this caliber. I was not bothered by Wynton's
insect startup of his solo. I found it quite imaginative and fun. We
only have one clip of this concert; I would tire if he did that on every
tune, but I doubt that to be the case.
Ok, let's rock the boat a bit more. Another personage that has his hard
core fans and his less enamored is my buddy Daniel Huck. Here is a clip
of him sitting in with Hot Antic JB. Daniel scats after the vocals then
has the second sax solo.

Daniel is capable of playing all sorts of music modern, old, jazz and
non jazz. However, some think he is wasting our time when he plays old
style jazz. I disagree. I think he is great and enjoy every time I share
the bandstand with him. He is on a tune on our last CD. Ok, what do you
think -- Daniel good; Daniel bad?
All the best to all, Gary
