Duke Ellington at the Paramount Theatre
Starting on this day in 1948, Duke Ellington and His Orchestra topped the stage show
at the Paramount Theatre in NYC's Times Square, in support of John Farrow's suspense
film "The Big Clock." Ellington's billing described him as "America's Foremost Modern
Composer." Featured soloists with the band were Johnny Hodges, Ray Nance, Al Hibbler,
and Kay Davis. Also on the program were the Four Step Brothers and comedian George
Kirby. As an extra added attraction, the Paramount offered Ella Fitzgerald, "The
First Lady of Song." Doors opened at 8:00am, with all tickets priced at 55 cents
until 1:00pm. Those were the days!

"Are you crazy," says Mick, "Have you seen how many of their owners go blind?"
