I am fortunate to have two CDs of these two fine groups-one sent to be a few years ago by a list member. BUT in each case the instrumentation is missing a key player- Bob 's band performs at the Smithsonian minus a trombone-a very hot performance mostly on soprano sax- The band has the standard Dixieland instrumentation minus the trombone- Anyone know why? Likewise the Bourbon Street band performs with only four instruments-trumpet, trombone, banjo and tuba- again-is there a special reason for this minimal instrumentation?
I recall Turk Murphy eliminating the drummer on some of his recordings-thought the drums presented a "dead sound."
Anyone have any knowledge about the usual instrumentation?
Thanks!!! Ted
