Hello Steve,
The bass saxophone player is Joe Rushton, who played bass sax regular with Goodman during some of the 2nd WW years. The recording most certainly was made in 1942-1943, as also is indicated by the intro text that includes : WAR BOND.
There are more videos known with Rushton on bass sax with Goodman, most famous the version of : Why Don't You Do Right, sung by a young Peggy Lee.
Goodman was at the height of his fame in 1938, but in 1942 still world famous, so the sideman certainly could make there living playing in this band. If it was enjoyable for them is hard to tell. The Goodman band was not always known to be a nice place to play, since Goodman was a strict disciplinarian. Always many changes in the line-up, certainly during these war years.
To find the names of these musicians might not be too easy. The famous names like Harry James, Gene Krupa had left before 1940.To come close you could try to find records from these years with Joe Rushton. However there are not too many caused by a recording ban in these years.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma (bass sax specialist) www.dixielandcrackerjacks.com
