Dear Steve,
Back in 1961, a young very teenage Australian group almost didn't get to appear on Corrine Kirby's national ABC TV program 'Let's Make A Date' because of its name, when the Channel 2 executives realised that they were about to present a '"Gin Bottle Jazz Band" as Melbourne's youngest jazz band. Hasty off-stage discussions resulted in a change to a more respectable name and the Red Onion Jazz Band title was chosen in honour of the 1924 Louis Armstrong recording group.
The rest, as they say, is Australian jazz history.
The band, led by drummer Allan Browne, went on to achieve an enviable reputation worldwide.
As has Allan himself.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
