A reference to an article about "cleaning your horn out" was just posted.
Seems some people get coughs & diseases from what is living within their
horns.
I remember hearing some guys say that washing their horns would wash out the
"soul"! What it does is wash out the left over hamburger!!
My trombone gets a full blown wash-out (*) every week. And, I swab the
inside of the outside slides before each gig with a swab on a metal bar. I
then apply a tiny bit of fresh cream, and after putting the outer slide back
on & moving it back & forth a bit...I remove all the cream applied on the
inside slide. A little water does the rest. Clean horn, great slide, and
no diseases...at least not ones caused by my own horn!
I play "clean Jazz"!
(*) I hold the parts of the horn up to the bathtub tap & shoot hot water
through it, and use hand soap all over the outside. A bit of vaseline to
the tuning slide, and all is like new.
Mouthpiece gets a swab up the tube & washed with hot water, also.
