Here's a link to article on Voice of America website about Willis Conover
and his significance in making jazz a world-wide phenomenon. There is also
an excellent 4 minute video so you can hear and see this presentation
honoring him.
One of the early conventions of the American Federation of Jazz Societies
was held in Washington, DC. Mr. Conover was speaker for this event. He was
convalescing from surgery for removal of a cancer of the tongue, so he
wasn't in his usual mellifluous voice. Thrust of his talk was that jazz was
now universal. He had taped examples of " jazz around the world." The
audience was thrilled to see and hear him.
