Getting this piece of education reminds me of an event of couple of weeks
ago. My kids banjo band had just finished their first sight read of
"Sentimental Journey". The ten year old intellectual in the band spoke right up,
"Where did this tune come from? I never heard of it." In answering him,
I did mention that there were probably 10,000 songs that neither he nor I
had heard of.
As I have mentioned already, Sentimental Journey was an instant hit with
the 9 - 13 year olds. They like simple chromatics and syncopation. When
they have to start on the eighth note after "one", I tell them things like,
they have to hiccup and then play.
