Perhaps the closest thing to an OKOM jazz festival is coming to Cape
May New Jersey this coming September 17. (Friday) Three Dixieland
Bands will be presenting a "September Mardi Gras" along Beach Avenue
in this historic town on the Atlantic Ocean at the southern tip of the
state.
Herb Roselle's "Atlantic City Jazz band" will be performing from 7 to
10 PM at Cabana's, 429 Beach Avenue. Cabana's phone is 800-582-5933.
This is a banjo / tuba classic style band of renown in the area. Herb
is a wonderful trombonist who had his own band at the Showboat Casino
in Atlantic City for years. Cabana's phone number is 800-582-5933

The "Al Harrison Dixieland Band" will be at Carney's, 401 Beach Avenue
from 9 to 11 PM. Carney's phone is 609-884-4424. Al is one of the
premier trumpet players in the Eastern US. Besides playing on the
Mississippi Riverboats, he has played at the Showboat Casino off and
on for the past 25 years. This is a piano / double bass more modern
sounding Dixieland Band

"The Barbone Street Jazz Band" will be at the Marquis deLafayette www.marquiscapemay.com/
located at 501 Beach Avenue from 7 to 10 PM. Their phone is
800-257-0432. The band is guitar / double bass and mixes swing with
Dixieland. Three over 70 old timers here plus an 80 year old bass
player. Some of them played with many of the greats of the 20th
century (like Lester Young, Clifford Brown Billie Holiday, Roy
Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins et al) Then again, they have a 30 year old
female trombonist, who says she feels safe among the old timers. Ha!

There will be great New Orleans food, Mardi Gras Beads and lots of
swinging Dixieland. One $20 ticket gives you admission to all venues.
Drinks and food are on you.
Profits will be donated to the COMMUNITY FOOD BANK OF NJ.
Plus, a special After Glo Party at the Merion Inn from 10 PM until
everyone leaves. The legendary jazz pianist George Mesterhazy and
friends are there and I'm guessing a jam session with them and others
will develop. If you don't know who Mr. Mesterhazy is, shame on you.
<grin>
NOTE: Cape May is a neat resort., Stay the weekend with your main
squeeze. It is also on the Atlantic Flyway for you birdwatchers so
bring your binoculars.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
