How very sad to learn that Ray has passed on. His radio shows were always informative and illustrated Ray's dedication to the "jazz decades" which went back from the 20's to the present. He was witty, fond of alliteration and keenly insightful.
His introduction to the various "peppy period pops" always brought life to the music in personal way. Each show was a doctoral thesis presented in a joyful personable format.

Fortunately it is possible to hear past shows on this web link: http://streams.wgbh.org:8010/listen.pls

By the way, I saw Ray's Paramount Jazz Band at the Santa Rosa Dixie Festival about 12 yrs ago. His playing was equally exuberant. I carry an image in my mind's eye of Ray's big bass drum: a symbol of his warm heart and unabashed love of jazz: tasty, tender or tough as required.

Ray, I will miss you. My condolences go to your family and friends.
Respectfully,
Art Wood
