Bob Smith asked:
> I'm wondering about the forename to Goldie Lucas who played banjo and guitar with King Oliver and Clarence Williams, I assumed that the forename "Goldie" belonged to the fair sex, but listening to the vocal trio (Lucas is a member) on the Chocolate Dandies' recordings, I can't hear a female voice.....
Dear Bob,
I have a source that gives the name as Golden 'Goldie' Lucas.
He was a member of the Bingie Madison orchestra that did not record under its own name, but was used by Clarence Williams (3 sessions), King Oliver (2 sessions) and James P Johnson (1 session) for recordings.
I also have a published note that says "No biographical information is known about Lucas except that HE [my caps] played w. Bingie Madison band in late 1930 and early 1931."
There are photographs of him in the 1974 Albert McCarthy book 'Big Band Jazz, with the Bingie Madison Tune Tatlers - 1928 (page 49) and Bobbie Brown's Society Orchestra - early 20s ( page 54).
Kind regards,
Bill.
