[Dixielandjazz] Smooth Jazz the original concept changed. (like Dixieland?)

Here is what smooth jazz was no too long after Grover Washington  
(Philadelphia jazz Musician), according to many talking heads,   
invented it.

NOTE ALSO THE CROWD REACTION!!!!  on the first one. Then draw your own  
conclusions as to what happened to the genre. Note the comments on #2.

IMO, Washington and the steel drummer (#1) are mixing improvisation  
with set parts to a funky R&B rhythm. Like Dixieland, from the days of  
ODJB through say, Eddie Condon's gang at his joint, the smooth jazz  
genre changed quite a bit from Grover work to its present day  
performers.

And no question Washington is improvising of #2 is there?
