Hellen Trauble, the great Wagnerian opera star, loved to sing some good
old bar room ballads, and did so often with Jimmy Durante. I played
opposite of her when with Red Ingle
at the Riversied Hotel in Reno in the '50's, and she loved sitting in
with the band; and while she never tried Summertime, she belted out some
pretty decent Bill Baily, St. Louis Blues and Mama Don't Allow . She and
Red used to sit and sip a few brews after the last sets were over and
tell war stories from both opera and jazz.. She said she learned how to
down a beer or so here father's St. Louis saloon. She was a very nice
lady with a great big sense of humor and "dug" being "with the band."
