Hello All,
Have been following this thread and feel it has digressed from "real jazz"
as envisaged by Peter who I knew well. I cannot compete with the length of
some of the posted examples but for what it is worth I searched through my
collection and found a couple of recorded examples that were longer than
some of those submitted. These examples are real New Orleans music, played
by some of the best practitioners in the 50s. I am referring to the Eureka
Brass Band recordings from 1951. Although they will not be to every bodies
taste they are certainly in the true spirit of the genre.
I refer you to the Eureka Brass Band recordings from 1951 on a vinyl disc
that I have , but is probably available in cd format now, "New Orleans
Parade". Despite what the record sleeve says the music was not recorded live
at an actual funeral but at an outdoor location,1552 St. Philip St. N.O. Aug
25th 1951. Of the four tunes on the disc. West Lawn Dirge is approx. 10 mins
long, Garlands Of Flowers runs for approx. 11 mins.
If looking for jazz recordings Bunk Johnson's originally untitled blues that
runs for 9 mins ,4 secs and was given the name when it was subsequently
released asMidnight Blues This was recorded just after midnight Aug 4th
1944 as an experiment at 33/13 rpm by Bill Russell before the days of
commercially available lps.
With reference to the required swing content the Eureka music does not
swing, both tunes are dirges. Nevertheless I can be aroused by them. The
other two tunes on the disc are a different matter. Sing On and Lady Be
Good, enough to raise somebody from the dead.
Cheers,
Glen Page.
