Probably because traditional jazz was originally dance music. 

I know some bands that don't like to play tunes that last more than 3 or 4
minutes. I have no problem with a tune that runs 6-7 minutes, if needed, in
order to let soloists complete what they've started -- and perhaps a bit
longer if it's an audience of all listeners and no dancers.
