Bob, most home CD players have a pin hole in the front where a thin skewer
can be inserted to open the drawer. As this probably doesn't apply to multi
disc or in car machines, that's been of no use.

Neither probably will be the following, but it should be of general interest
or warning.

Earlier this year my wife had a longish period of health problems and
hospitalisation, where she didn't use her computer a great deal apart from
emails.

When she finally went to record onto a disc the tray wouldn't open. We
couldn't budge it at all, so in it went to our friendly local computer shop.
When they got it open, they found that there was a CDR in the tray. If you
look at the recordable surface of such a disc you'll see a circle of white
material between the centre hole and the recordable section. In the period
that it was in the tray, the general warmth of the tower had turned that
white material into a sticky goo that adhered to the tray and prevented it
opening.

The lesson, don't leave a CDR in your computer tray for any length of time.

Best wishes
Jack Mitchell
