W've had the similar problem in Sydney (OZ) for years, pubs have closed or 
been "gentrified". Now the government has woken up - the law has been 
changed so that pubs or restaurants whose main purpose is not entertainment 
can now employ musicians without needing a licence. The big centres filled 
with rock bands will probably still need a licence and worry about all the 
fire restrictions etc. that go with it, but small pubs or restaurants will 
be able to hire a pianist or trio or quartet without any problem. Sanity at 
last.
