Dear Al,

I play trombone, and this is what your four articulations mean to me:

1) Staccato: very short notes, but not accented, rathe like the sound of
water drops falling on to a hard surface.
2) ¯ over the note: tenuto; note held as long as possible, but with a very
short break before the next note.
3) ^ over the note: the note is played short , but slightly longer than
staccato.
4) > over the note: the note is started with a pronounced attack, but no
louder than the current note strength for the passage.

Kind Regards

Bob Smith
