KUBRICK, Stanley -
1928, Jul 26: New York, NY 1999, Mar 7
>From the age of 12 he was passionate about jazz, playing in a school jazz
band, and dreaming of becoming a professional drummer. His father, a
doctor, gave him a camera for his birthday the following year and this was to
determine his subsequent career, eventually becoming an eminent film director.
Before that came about he was a distinguished photographer for Look
magazine and it was his photography accompanying a sympathetic article in volume
14, number 12 on 6th June 1950, written by Joseph Roddy, "Dixieland Jazz Is
'Hot' Again", that was instrumental in bringing national fame to the
George Lewis Band. Kubrick had been an early fan of George's and had heard him
at Manny's Tavern. It was Roddy's original intention to write about Sharkey
but Kubrick and others took him out to Manny's and won him over. As early
as 1949 George Lewis was considering giving up music within a year or two
unless things improved. The Look article and the subsequent ongoing interest
enabled Lewis to become a national figure and traditional New Orleans jazz
to be preserved in its birthplace.
