The standard for Columbia 78s recorded in Australia was 96 grooves per inch. 
However when Columbia started recording acoustically in Australia in 1926 
they found the grooves were too fine for the gramophones then in use, so 
they reduced the grooves to 80 per inch. This meant that to fit on the disc 
an intro, verse and three choruses, the bands had to play their numbers 
about 20% faster. Twenties bandleader Eric Pearse told me that the vocalist 
used to beat the unaccustomed time for the musicians to follow.
