The trumpeter Zeke Zarchy played in my band when I lived in Los Angeles.  He was losing his hearing in one ear also.  This was because of working for so many years in the studios.  They used a click track and in order for the musicians to hear it over the music, it would have to be turned up very loud.  40 years of this destroyed his hearing on one side.
