[Dixielandjazz] Fiddle-burnings?

According to the reminscences of Rex Stewart and others, Steve Brown's
bass slapping had something to do with Goldkeatte's beating Henderson
in a battle of bands.
Should his influence be ignored because of the colour of his skin - white?
