Hey John:
Your wish is my command. Go to the below site and then click on "Donna
Lee" which is a bop tune written over the chords of "Back Home in
Indiana". Interested Listmates can hum the melody of Indiana over this
tune to hear that.
http://www.bopjo.com/music.html
Once there, click on "Donna Lee", or "Impressions", an Mp3 will come
on and you'll hear real be-bop banjo by Tom Slavicek. He is playing a
5 string banjo, his own make, to which he added a 6th string tuned to
a low A.
If you scroll down this site, you can hear all kinds of "progressive
banjo", and some really neat stuff, like Thelonious Monk's "Straight
No Chaser". There is a lot of interesting banjo picking on this site.
Reminds me of the time I played "Confirmation" in a clarinet - banjo -
tuba trio during a stock pick-up truck race at a county fair. Did it
as a joke but the audience loved it. Steve DiBonaventura was the
banjoist and many listmates and banjo pickers know him.
And you thought this was going to be a banjo joke. <grin>
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
