Greetings folks,
On 2nd January, Martin Litton, James Evans and I assembled at St John’s
Arts Centre in Old Harlow to record and film a new album of classic
Ragtime and Jelly Roll Morton compositions.
Martin Litton is recognised as an authority on early jazz piano styles
(he recently appeared on a Radio Three documentary on Earl Hines). He
has cleverly arranged ‘The Entertainer’, ‘Maple Leaf Rag’ and others by
Scott Joplin for clarinet, piano & drums.
A well respected interpreter of Jelly Roll Morton, Martin has come up
with some sparkling arrangements of a handful of Morton classics,
including, ‘Kansas City Stomp’, ‘The Pearls’ and ‘Grandpa’s Spells’.
Also included are selections from James Scott, J Russell Robinson and a
James Evans original.
I have done a rough mix of the sound and dubbed it onto the film we shot
of ‘Steamboat Stomp’ on 2nd January and you can see this on YouTube.

It will also be on www.traditional-jazz.com later.
The album will be released as a CD/DVD box set in March. Martin Litton
has written some very informative, well researched sleeve notes to
accompany this important release.
I know many fans as well as musicians were deeply saddened at the
untimely death of Campbell Burnap last May. I had the honour of working
with him on many dates, firstly with the ‘Legends of American
Dixieland’, 20 years ago, with Art Hodes and Wild Bill Davison. There
are a couple of videos on YouTube of Campbell with the band filmed by
Louis Lince in Norwich, at these links:

Campbell was subsequently a valued member of my ‘Legends of British
Trad’ show, as was Dick Charlesworth, who we also lost last year. He
was also a regular guest at many of my festivals and a familiar voice on
Jazz FM and BBC Radio.
Mrs Jennifer Burnap has sent the following information about a DVD which
celebrates Campbell’s life and which I’m sure will be a must have for
all his many fans. The proceeds will go to charity.
