>From the coruscating "The Song for Me":
BLANCHARD, Terence Oliver Trumpet
1962, Mar 13: New Orleans
Blanchard could play piano when he was five and sang with a local group,
the Harlem Harmony Kings. He began on trumpet at the age of eight,
encouraged by his father, but also was inspired by Alvin Alcorn who played in a jazz
band which visited Terrence's elementary school. Studied at the New Orleans
Center for Creative Arts under Ellis Marsalis, and he went from there to
study at Rutgers University in 1980. Afterwards he spent two years playing
with the Lionel Hampton big band. Also played with Art Blakey's Jazz
Messengers, replacing Wynton Marsalis. His playing has been always with modern
groups although his technique is said to display influences of earlier jazz
styles. He is probably best known for his work with film maker Spike Lee. He
now lives in New York. It is not known if he is in any way related to
either Edgar or Osceola Blanchard.
