Last night we saw Don Vappie's Creole Jazz Serenaders at the Napa (CA)
Opera House. Modest crowd, about 1/3 full, mostly geezers and
geezerettes, but a few young folks (possibly dragged along). The
performance was very good, very professional musicians (none of whom -
except Vappie, I had ever heard of). The lineup was a little different,
trumpet AND cornet, clarinet and tenor sax plus drums, bass, piano and
Vappie on banjo. Played a mix of "standards" he attributed to Jelly
Roll Morton and King Oliver (Riverside Blues, Tin Roof, High Society et
al), and some caribbean rhythm tunes some of them original. One tune,
Nelson Stomp, he attributed to Jelly Roll, but it was new (obscure?) to
me. Vappie is an entertainer, and wove a story about Santa Claus
visiting New Orleans into the tune selections. At the end they played a
rouser, something about "Please Come Home for Christmas" and several of
the young folks were up dancing in the isles.
