Dear Listers:

Miff Mole is one of my influences on trombone.  If you want to hear him playing really well, try the Edison hill-and-dale 78 acoustical recordings of Red and Miff's Stompers in 1926.  If these are not in your collection, you can listen to them on the Red Hot Jazz Archive.  Listen in particular to Stampede, Alabama Stomp and Hurricane.  Mole's solo on Hurricane is a work of art, and about as removed from the New Orleans "shout' style as it is possible to get.
