Monk seemed to think Ellington might have learned as much from him as vice versa, presumably bearing in mind PIANO IN THE FOREGROUND

Just enjoying the Thelonius Monk Quartet on BBC 4 after not enjoying the
preceeding show by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
I do not like Hard Bop and Blakey's set lacked melodic structure for the
most part.
No wonder the rock and rollers ousted the jazzers in the '50s.
Monk on the other hand is a different kettle of fish.
I have always liked Monk and I think the reason is that he plays tunes
and they are simple, economic and make sense. He clearly owes more to
Ellington than he does to Parker.
listening to his rhythm section with Ben Riley on drums, and it is
apparent that this is not a million miles away from what most on this
list would call OKOM. Or am I just becoming a dirty bopper?
Nice to see a young Humph compereing the show.
Have a good weekend.

The old man isn't letting any grass grow under his feet. You go,
George. If you present the stars, the audience will come. But will
they come on short notice?

Cheers,

New Festivals From George Wein

George Wein, the music impresario and longtime producer of the JVC
Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, has announced
the initial lineups for two new eponymous festivals that will run this
summer in Newport, R.I. In a release, New Festival Productions said
George Wein?s Folk Festival 50 would run from July 31 through Aug. 2
and feature performers includingPete Seeger (right), the Decemberists,
Arlo Guthrie, Fleet Foxes, Joan Baez, Neko Case and Judy Collins;
George Wein?s Jazz Festival 55 would run from Aug. 7 through 9 and
include Tony Bennett, Branford Marsalis, Etta James, Esperanza
Spalding and theDave Brubeck Quartet. In 2007 Mr. Wein, 83, sold his
company, Festival Productions, to Festival Network. Rhode Island
officials said they had canceled Festival Network?s contract to
present events at Fort Adams State Park, where the festivals have been
held, because of late payments.

Hi all

Last night I stumbled across this website:
http://www.musipedia.org/index.php?id=1&L=0

It is supposed to let you enter a melody, rhythm or other aspect of a
song composition (using various keyboard, screen-visual or other
inputs) and it will try to identify it. It did not work too well for
me on the several songs I tried, but it does seem to have a bit of a
"classical" bias at this point.

Interesting idea, anyway...
