*NEW ORLEANS** INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COLLOQUIUM***
*ANNOUNCES, “IMPROVISING”***
The New Orleans International Music Colloquium announces the 2009
Colloquium theme, “Improvising.” The two-day series of informal
presentations, panels and presentations will take place Friday, April 17 and
Saturday, April 18, 2009 in association with the French Quarter Festival.
All Colloquium events are free and open to the public.
New Orleans International Music Colloquium events will begin Friday at 9:30
AM and Saturday at 10:00 AM at the New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park

9:30 *Joseph Logsdon Memorial Coffee & Welcome*
10:00 *Improvisation *- Dr. Charles Chamberlain presents a selection from
his thesis on improvisation in New Orleans music.
11:00 *Davenport**, Iowa: A Staging Point for New Orleans Music *– Sue
Fischer will discuss the early Northern reaches of New Orleans sounds.
12:00 *The Steamer President *– Captain Doc Hawley, Dr. Carolyn Kolb, and
Dr. Bruce Raeburn will discuss the context, the history, and the future of
the famous New Orleans floating dancehall.
1:00 *Often Mistaken for Jazz *– Dr. Jack Stewart, with pianist Beth Turner,
examines a pre-jazz body of music sometimes called Rag-Blues Barrelhouse or
Honky Tonk.
2:00 *Bandleader John Robichaux *– Daniel Vernhettes will present
information from his biographical work on the legendary musical figure.
3:00 *Lemon Nash Sings the Blues *– Jon Pult will explore the un-sung career
of New Orleans ukulele player, Lemon Nash.
4:00 *New Orleans** Rhythm and Blues: Why Doesn’t It Get Any Respect? *-
Rick Coleman asks why Rhythm and Blues, one of the city’s most popular
musical forms, does not get any scholarly attention.

10:00 *In the Cup: A Day Spent with the Mardi Gras Indians *– Jon Pult
relates Carnival Day 1989 spent roaming the streets with, and listening to,
members of the Wild Magnolias.
11:00 *Improvisation on Record *– Dan Meyer will illustrate improvisation on
early jazz recordings by comparing the music on alternate takes of the same
piece.
12:00 *The Danny Barker Legacy *– Guitarist Esquizito, aka Eric Perez, will
demonstrate the story-telling, myth-creating, and musical sides of guitarist
and raconteur Danny Barker.
1:00 *The Enigmatic Bolden Band Photograph *– Justin Winston presents his
analysis of the mysteries of the Buddy Bolden Band photograph.
2:00 *Before and After the First Jazz Record *– George Schmidt, accompanied
by Dan Meyer, will examine bassist “Red” Mackie’s comments that recorded
jazz sounds destroyed the creative variety of earlier New Orleans music.
3:00 *German Influences on New Orleans Music *– Dr. Jack Stewart will show
what effect the U.S.’s largest immigrant group had on New Orleans.
4:00 *New Orleans** Dance in the 1930s *– Sue Fischer, Heidi Rosenau, and
Joe McGlynn will demonstrate what and how New Orleanians were doing on the
dance floor.
