Hey Chuck:
You are welcome.
Funny how small the world is. I played with Al at the very beginning
of his professional career starting in 1957. Steve Hester sent me some
pictures which brought back memories for me. Al used the nickname
Jimmy while working in NYC because there was another Al Winters in the
802 AF of M book and they're was confusion.
I was talking with Ed Metz about Al and Ed worked with him also. As
did Paul and Frank Hubbell on Long Island 50 years ago.
I loved playing with Al because he was always there with the right
notes. Not a wrong note in his horn.He was in Kenny Butterfield's
Beale Street Stompers along with me in the 50s. He and Carl Wilhelm
played trombone in that band at various times. Wilhelm went on to
graduate from Juilliard and become principal trombone with the
Pittsburgh symphony. Funny thing about that, he beat out Glenn Dodson
for that job as Dodson would relate to me when he joined Barbone Street.
Glenn always claimed he lost because he insulted the concert master
during the audition. <grin>
Cheers,
Steve
