Did anyone know this statement by Duke, and when he said it?
"Bud Shank is too much. I told him I had his contract ready, but I can't get him to leave California. He was the greatest part of Kenton's Neophonic concert the other night, and he was even greater with us the last two days. He even shook Johnny Hodges . . . Bud Shank is something else!"

The trombone mailing list reported that West Coast jazz legend, Bud Shank, died of a heart attack at his home in Arizona on April 2, 2009. This is sad news. Bud's website is here: http://www.budshankalto.com/
I remember seeing Bud at the Concerts By the Sea, the Lighthouse, and other venues in the Los Angeles area when I was just getting started as a jazz fan. I treasure the recordings he made with the L.A. Four and under his own name.
He will be missed.
