Alas Dudley Moore -- a serious jazz pianist who rather astonished Ray Brown -- did not sing the words in his Beethoven variations on the cheery old tune, as can be seen on YouTube. I've lost the link, and am a little too pushed to search for Dudley Moore and Beethoven.
Part of the joke was in the words sometime sung to the jolly melody, now assiduously footnoted on this site.

If the content of Hitler's jockstrap merits mention . . . 
but then again, it probably swung more, solo.
