She was immensely popular in NYC during the late 1950s-60s. It was a
time of jazz musical exploration there. In those years, middle
eastern/far eastern music music was also being explored along with her
Peruvian warbles. For example, clarinetist Tony Scott, looking to be
different from Goodman and Buddy DeFranco, played and recorded a lot
of middle eastern styled music. (before he went avant garde)
My wife, reminded me of that a year or two ago when I was playing a
Tony Scott CD re-issue from the late 50s which was mostly his
experimental middle eastern jazz. She heard it and said, "Remember
those years in NYC with all that "new" jazz?" Like Yma's obit, it
brought back memories of a wonderful era.
