The bassist is very definitely Georges Duvivier, son of a French father, who as I recall began by offering his services to Coleman Hawkins, who sat at the piano and tried him out. Along with Milt Hinton he was said to have been one of two bassists who could still conjure the earlier magic from the older Teddy Wilson. He did record some stunning things with Bud Powell, and people who worked closely with him have said that when it comes to listing the bassists who were the very best it's necessary to mention him: for mastery of timing and intonation, precision and versatility without sacrifice of swing.
His recorded debut was with Lucky Millinder's big band in 1941,
and those people who like listening to bass players should have no problem understanding why Goodman or Soprano Summit or Benny Carter booked Duvivier. A free music lesson in every performance.
