Dear Steve,
Silly me.
After I posted my piece on the "Riverboat Shuffle' lyrics, I realised 
that I had forgotten to check "Stardust Melody' - Richard Sudhalter's 
book.
It's there on pages 202-204!
"Freighter" = girlfriend.
"Alligator" (as a verb) = dig.
So we now seem to have:
  "....bring your 'freighter', come on 'alligator' that band....."
Does anyone have the published sheet music?
