Thanks for posting the link - a great performance!
I have been in similar situations many times, I do street  
performances quite a lot. Picking a location that allows better  
audience interaction is one of the things a street band has to learn  
to do. Gunhild is an amazing performer with a lot of experience, so I  
don't have a clue why that group was playing right there. (If the  
audience has to cross a busy street to put money in the hat, they are  
less inclined ;-)

I think the reason they "got away" with having no traffic until the  
end probably was because the garbage truck was blocking the flow for  
a while.
