Ah, yes, "Cajun" Verrett. It was my good fortune to see and hear him
many times in person and in my record collection. I was a student
(arranging) of Matty Matlock, knew Eddie Miller and Nappy well, and
thanks to those mentors who let a young pup sit in at their sessions in
the old Club 47 in Studio City to learn and earn his chops, I became a
sort of "nephew" to them. My dad, Red Ingle, also knew "Cajun" well --
often seeing him in one studio or another at a recording studio. I
recall dad and he swapping tales of another New Orleans character,
drummer Monk Hazel one time at one of the Local 47 parties out at Pops
Willow Farm in Sun Valley. Another member of that picnic was he, Joe
Yukl, Abe Lincoln, and Elmer Smithers yakking it up like an overserved
fraternity reunion.
Talk about players!
I am tickled to hear his name after so many years, and it gave me a real
charge to recall both his playing and the very nice fellow that he was.
I am sure that you will be getting many more messages from others with
their own recollections. But I am so happy you sent this post our way.
My best regards to you and your family, and know that at least one
"kid," now "an old guy," remembers a fine player with pleasant recollection.
