I can't agree with your calling the washboard "a less prominent" instrument.

Several bands call themselves 'Washboard Bands', e.g. Johnny Dodds' 
Washboard Band, Clarence Williams' Washboard Band, Jimmy Bertrand's 
Washboard Wizards, and (tongue in cheek) Louis Armstrong's Washboard 
Beaters.

Even Benny Goodman never titled his bands "Benny Goodman and his Clarinet 
Band".

So, what price "prominence"?
