I understand that Woody Allen didn't go to Hollywood to collect the Oscar
for Annie Hall because it clashed with the night he was due to play with his
band in New York. It is also true that he paid handsomely to record in
Preservation Hall for his film Sleeper, and afterwards Percy Humphrey said, "He has a
wonderful ear. He did what you should do when sit in with another man's
band. He played along with what we played. He didn't try to be a celebrity." Both
Albert Burbank and Jim Robinson congratulated him: "You're real good … "
